Here at ITP, we like to make getting your tax return completed, lodged and refunded to you in as little time as possible. Having prepared tax returns for Australian individuals and businesses for 50 years, ITP understand the process can be stressful and time consuming. With our help, we can take this all away for you – and maximise your tax refund as well!
You can have a Tax Accountant prepare and lodge your tax return in many ways.
Book A Face To Face Appointment
Your ITP Tax Accountant is available for face-to-face appointments which take place in an office. There are over 200 ITP branches throughout Australia, so there’s sure to be a branch near you. You can book your appointment online or ring our branch directly, where you can arrange a suitable date and time.
During your appointment, your tax accountant will welcome you to their branch and then ask for your details. They will need your Tax File Number (TFN), name, date of birth and address to begin the process.
Pro Tax Tip: There are only a limited number of professionals you should give your TFN to. The list includes your employer, bank and other financial institutions, government department and your tax agent. Keep your TFN otherwise safe and secure.
Your ITP Tax Accountant will then lead you through the process and maximise all of your claims. They’ll even ask questions you might not even know! Your ITP Tax Accountant will revise your information, calculate your tax refund, double check for law compliance and accuracy and then ask you to sign your information.
When you’re happy, your ITP Tax Accountant will lodge your tax return to the ATO on your behalf. Your tax refund will normally be issued within 12 working days. Click here to read how long your tax refund should take. (https://itp.com.au/how-long-does-it-take-to-get-a-tax-refund-in-australia/)
The ATO will send you a notice and you will receive your refund via direct deposit into your nominated bank account.
Over The Phone
Some people prefer a phone appointment. If you work remotely, or are too far away from a branch, a phone appointment may be a good option for you. Your phone appointment will be conducted in a similar fashion to a face-to-face appointment, however your Tax Accountant may ask you to email your list of expenses through to them. Your ITP Tax Accountant will finish up your tax return in the same manner as a face-to-face appointment. They will then email your summary to you for you to sign, and then will lodge your tax refund when they have received your signed permission.
Zoom Your Way
Much the same as a phone call, you’ll be able to see your tax accountant face-to-face on your computer screen. This is a great way to get your tax return professionally done if you can’t leave the home or office. Your appointment can even be slotted into your lunch break!
Don’t have time for a phone or zoom call. Your ITP Tax Accountant can complete your tax refund for you over email. Your tax return will be handled in the usual manner, although it may take a little longer if the Tax Accountant needs to ask questions and wait for your answer. They will proceed and lodge your tax return with the ATO on your behalf when they have received your signed permission. Your tax refund will be deposited directly into your nominated bank account.
If you’re after professional help and can’t get into an office, ITP offer on express online service. You’ll be lead through a series of easy questions which will guide you every step of the way. You’ll be able to securely upload your documents through our fast and easy portal.
Once you have submitted your information, your details are checked by a tax agent who will work hard to maximise your tax refund. You will be sent a summary of your claims to sign, and then when you return your forms via email, our internal Tax Accountants will lodge your tax return to the ATO on your behalf. Your tax refund will be deposited directly into your nominated bank account as normal.
How Long Will My Appointment Take?
Most tax returns will take between 30 – 60 minutes to prepare, and depends on the level of detail required. For example, an employee claiming their personal work-related expenses will not take as long as a person who runs their own small business with depreciating assets. Your appointment will take the same amount of time whether it is face-to-face, over the phone or via Zoom. If in doubt, a quick call to your local ITP Tax Accountant will give you an idea how long your appointment will take.
Preparation Is Key
The ATO has three golden rules:
- Your claim must be an eligible work-related expense
- You must have already incurred the expense
- You must be able to prove your claim
Your ITP Tax Accountant may ask to see your receipts, tax invoices and other supporting documents you’ll need when it comes to make your claims. They can only claim what you can prove, so it’s best to be on top of your receipts to get your maximum tax return.
To assist, we’ve compiled a list of items to have prepared before your appointment.
